Removing the system fan
Attention:
v Replace a failed fan within 48 hours.
v
To ensure proper cooling and airflow, do not operate the server for more than 2
minutes with the cover removed.
To remove the system fan, complete the following steps.

1. Read the safety information that begins on page vii and “Installation guidelines”
on page 59.
2. Turn off the server and attached devices; then, disconnect all power cords and
external cables.
3. Remove the cover (see “Removing the cover” on page 61).
4. Remove the bezel (“Removing the bezel” on page 63).
5. Remove the air baffle:
a. Grasp the handle of the air baffle.
b. Rotate the air baffle upward and lift it out of the server.
6. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board and make a note where the
cable was connected for later installation.
7. Grasp the fan with both hands and pull firmly, extending the rubber grommets.
The grommets will be pulled through the holes in either the fan or the chassis
and can then be removed.
Note: It might be easier to use side cutter to sever the grommets.
8. Pull the fan up and out of the chassis.
9. If you are instructed to return the fan, follow all packaging instructions, and use
any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
