Accessing the System Board
Note: For information on removing the server cover, see “Removing
the Cover” on page 49.
To access the section of the system board you need to work with,
you might need to remove adapters or the riser card. Also, you
might need to remove cables that are attached to the system board.
When disconnecting cables, it is important to note where they
attach, so that you can reattach them later.
The following examples describe when you might need to remove
components:
When working with dual-inline memory modules (DIMMs), you
might need to remove adapters from the riser card. For
instructions on removing adapters, see “Removing Adapters” on
page 61. Instructions for installing and removing memory
modules are in “Installing or Removing DIMM Kits” on
page 69.
When replacing or upgrading the microprocessor you might
need to remove some adapters. For instructions, see “Removing
Adapters” on page 61. Also, to access the switches for updating
the settings for the microprocessor speed, you might need to
remove the riser card, an adapter, and any cables attached to the
system board. Instructions for installing the microprocessor
upgrade are in “Installing Microprocessor Upgrades” on
page 95.
When replacing the system battery, you need to remove the
riser card, adapters, and cables connected to the system board if
they impede your access. For instructions, see “Removing and
Replacing the Riser Card” on page 64 and “Removing
Adapters” on page 61. Instructions for replacing the battery are
in Appendix B, “Changing the Battery” on page 199.
When changing jumper and switch settings, you might need to
