Remote system log
A file located on a UNIX machine containing statistics and error messages. See also syslog.
SAN (Storage Area Network)
Network that connects storage devices and computer systems.
SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)
A SCSI interface is used to connect microcomputers to SCSI peripheral devices, such as many
hard disks and printers, and to other computers and local area networks.
Security Account Manager (SAM) database
A database used to authenticate users.
Share
A resource such as data or a printer device made available for use by users on other computer
systems. For example, a printer or a collection of files stored in a single directory tree on a file
server may be made available as a share. CIFS clients, which include most networked personal
computers, typically map a share to a drive letter.
Share level security
Share level security for Windows NT is the simplest security method available. Access to file
volumes or directories (shares) may be restricted on a share by share basis. The administrator can
set read only passwords and read/write passwords for each share on the system. Users wishing to
gain access to a share are asked to supply the correct password. Only users with the correct
password are given access to the share.
SMB (Server Message Block) protocol
A network protocol designed and implemented by Microsoft and used by Windows clients to
communicate file access requests to Windows servers. This has been replaced by CIFS.
SMP (Symmetric Multiprocessing)
A computer architecture in which multiple processors share the same memory, which contains one
copy of the operating system, one copy of any applications that are in use, and one copy of the
data. Because the operating system divides the workload into tasks and assigns those tasks to
whatever processors are free, SMP can potentially service more transactions within a fixed amount
of time than a single processor system.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
A TCP/IP protocol for sending messages from one computer to another on a network. This
protocol is used on the internet to route email.
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
The network management protocol for TCP/IP. In SNMP, agents, which can be hardware as well as
software, monitor the activity in the various devices on the network.
