HP StorageWorks NAS 8000 User’s Guide
IP address
A unique 32-bit value that identifies network hosts using TCP/IP. An IP address, or block of
addresses, is assigned upon application to organizations responsible for that function. No two
network hosts can be assigned the same IP address. Each address consists of a network number,
optional subnetwork number and host number, written as four numbers separated by periods. Each
number can be 0 to 255.
LAN (Local Area Network)
A communications infrastructure designed to use dedicated wiring over a limited distance
(typically a diameter of less than five kilometers) to connect a large number of intercommunicating
nodes. Ethernet and token ring are the two most popular LAN technologies. cf. wide area network
Logical drive
A logical grouping of one or more physical drives on a system, commonly referred to as a RAID
set.
LUN (Logical Unit Number)
A logical unit number (LUN) is a unique identifier used on a SCSI bus that enables it to
differentiate between up to eight separate devices (each of which is a logical unit). Each LUN is a
unique number that identifies a specific unit of storage, which may be an end user, a file, or an
application program.
Machine account
All NT workstations and servers on a network must be provided with a machine account in order
to participate in a domain.
Media Access Control (MAC) address
A unique, hardware specific address used to identify a network node.
Metadata
Data that describes data. In disk arrays, metadata consists of items such as array membership,
member extent sizes and locations, descriptions of logical disks and partitions, and array state
information. In file systems, metadata includes file names, file properties and security information,
and lists of block addresses at which each file’s data is stored.
Mount
In the Network File System (NFS), a protocol and set of procedures to specify a remote host and
file system or directory to be accessed. Also specified is the location of the accessed directories in
the local file hierarchy.
NIC (Network Interface Card)
An expansion card or other device used to connect a computer to a local area network.
