Steering cylinder heads on steering axles
Besides these lubrication tasks one must also
make sure that the steering cylinders and theoir
supply lines are properly bled.
Brake shaft bearings, outer and inner
Caution!
No grease or oil must enter into the
brake. Use only lithium saponified
grease with a dropping point higher
than 190 °C.
Change the grease in the wheel hub bearings
(Fig. 9.3.1f)
1. Jack the machine up safely and release the
brake.
2. Remove wheels and dust caps.
3. Remove the cotter pin and unscrew the
axle nut.
4. Use a suitable puller to extract the wheel hub
with brake drum, tapered roller bearing and
sealing elements from the steering knuckle.
5. Mark disassembled wheel hubs and bear-
ing cages to prevent mixing up during re-
assembly.
6. Clean the brake, check for wear, integrity
and function, replace worn parts.
The inside of the brake must be kept free of
lubricants and contamination.
7. Clean the wheel hubs thoroughly from inside
and outside.
- Remove all old grease.
- Thoroughly clean bearings and seals
(diesel oil) and check reusability.
- Before re-assembling the bearings slightly
grease the bearing seats and assemble all
parts in reverse order.
- Parts fitted on interference fits should be
pressed on with suitable tubes and without
skewing to protect against damage.
- Line bearings, the wheel hub cavity
be tween the bearings as well as the dust
cap with grease before assembly. The
grease quantity should be approx. one
fourth to one third of the free space in the
assembled hub.
8. Assemble the axle nut and adjust both bear-
ings and brake.
9. Then carry out a function test and an ap-
propriate test drive to be able to rectify any
possible faults.
For lubricating the wheel hub bearings
one should only use special ADR long-
term grease with a dropping point
higher than 190°C.
Wrong grease types and excessive
quantities can cause damage. Mixing
lithium saponified and monosodium
carbonate saponified greases can cause
damage because of incompatibility.
