LESSON 3: POWERTRAIN
Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) Generation II
4.0L Electronic Throttle Body (ETB)
The 2004 4.0L SOHC V6 and 4.6L 2V V8 engines are among the first engines with full-authority, Electronic
Throttle Control (ETC). The main reason for using the ETC system is to improve driveability. The ETC system is
a drive-by-wire system that completely eliminates the need for a conventional throttle cable between the throttle
pedal and the throttle body. All throttle plate movements are actuated by an electric motor after receiving
commands from the PCM. All cruise control functions are now managed by the PCM, and are carried-out
electrically.
•
The system does not have a conventional throttle cable between the accelerator pedal and the mechanical
throttle body.
•
This system replaces cruise control hardware, cables and actuators.
•
ETC system components include:
– Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS) assembly (with three tracks for redundency).
– New, enhanced-capacity PCM.
– New Electronic Throttle Body (ETB) includes:
– Brass-plated throttle valve.
