LESSON 4: ELECTRICAL
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
TPMS Module
The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) monitors the air pressure in all tires (except for the spare). The
TPMS components are:
•
The TPMS module that is located behind the right-hand C-pillar trim panel.
•
Four wheel-mounted TPMS sensors, one per tire (except the spare):
– Transmit radio signals to the TPMS module approximately every 60 seconds.
– The valve stem acts as the radio antenna and the module is the receiver.
– Are powered by batteries which cannot be independently replaced. The batteries and sensors are serviced as
an assembly.
•
The TPMS module compares data from each tire pressure sensor to the low pressure limits. If the TPMS
module determines that the tire pressure is below limits, the TPMS module communicates via the High Speed
CAN (HSCAN) network to the vehicle message center, which then displays a warning message and
illuminates the TPMS warning lamp.
