LESSON 2: CHASSIS
Normal Stability Assist System Characteristics
When the ignition switch is put in the RUN position, the stability assist module conducts a preliminary electrical
check. Then at approximately 20 km/h (12 mph), the hydraulic pump motor turns on for about one-half second.
•
Any malfunction of the anti-lock brake control system disables stability assist and illuminates the anti-lock
brake warning indicator. The power-assist braking system, however, continues to function normally.
•
When the system checks itself, a slight movement of the brake pedal can be felt. This test occurs above 48 km/h
(30 mph) and can take up to eight minutes on a curvy road.
•
The self-test runs if:
– The vehicle is stable.
– The driver is not braking.
– The accelerator pedal is slightly depressed.
•
After the self-test, the stability assist system is ready to activate when needed.
•
When stability assist activates, the driver may experience any of the following:
– A rumble or grinding sound much like ABS or traction control.
– A small deceleration or a reduction in the acceleration of the vehicle.
– The stability assist indicator will flash.
– A vibration in the brake pedal, much like ABS.
•
If the event is severe and the driver’s foot is not on the brake, the brake pedal moves to apply higher brake
forces. A ‘‘whoosh’’ sound can also be heard from under the instrument panel.
NOTE: The stability assist system activates only when the vehicle is traveling in a forward direction, not reverse.
Stability assist can be turned off by the driver, but the ABS function cannot.
