vPad-IV OPERATORS MANUAL

3.5.2 Fluid Connections

The fluid input to the vPad-IV Module is a female Luer connector located on the front panel (

Figure 15

).

The fluid output is a hose barb on the rear panel that is intended to fit 1/8" (3mm) inside diameter tubing.

An input/output tubing kit (part number

7300-004

) is provided with each vPad-IV Module. Connect the

input tubing set to the Luer input port of the Module. Note the input set includes a 3-way stopcock and a 21
gauge needle. As shown in

Figure 15

, one port of the stopcock connects to the device under test while the

other port is used for priming or flushing the Module with the syringe included in the kit. The needle
attached to the stopcock is intended to provide a flow resistance and is a test requirement specified in the
IEC60601-2-24 standard for infusion devices. The needle may be removed if desired, although test results
may be accordingly affected. Use of the needle is recommended, particularly when testing infusion devices
that have an intermittent or "pulsatile" delivery characteristic.

Connect the 1/8" ID tubing to the barbed output port of the Module. Place the other end of the output
tubing in an open collection vessel having a volume of 500 mL or larger. To avoid an unintentional back
pressure or vacuum, situate the collection vessel at approximately the same elevation as the Module.

Testing with an applied back pressure requires connecting the Module output to a

closed

container. A

pressure or vacuum may be created by connecting the output to an IV bag and respectively elevating or
lowering the bag accordingly. In practise, this technique may be used to generate back pressures within a
range of ±100 mmHg, which will meet the test requirements of some infusion device standards. Generation
of a positive back pressure exc100 mmHg, for example up to +300 mmHg (40 kPa) per IEC60601-
