Glossary
10Base-T
The 802.3 standard for operating over Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable at 10
Megabits per second baseband.
100Base-T
IEEE standard for Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps CSMA/CD).
100Base-TX
IEEE Fast Ethernet standard for 100 Mbps Ethernet over Category 5 UTP/STP.
100Base-T4
IEEE Fast Ethernet standard for 100 Mbps Ethernet over Category 3 UPT/STP.
802.3
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) physical layer standard for
Ethernet coaxial cable. It specifies the carrier sense multiple access with collision
detection (CSMA/CD) access method on bus topologies.
Bridge
A network device that connects local or wide area networks using the same
communications protocols into a single LAN so that data can be transferred from one
network to another.
Broadcast
Indicates a message sent across a network to all workstations.
Broadcast Storm
A condition where multiple hosts on a network respond simultaneously to the same
broadcast. Typically, this occurs when older IP Routers are located ton the same network
using a new protocol.
Category 3 Cabling
A type of UTP/STP cable standardized by EIA/TIA that can handle signaling up to 16
MHz (16 Mbps).
