Ethernet
An IEEE 802.3 standard for networks using baseband transmission at 10 Mbps using
CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) for network access.
It is usually a bus or star topology. Coaxial, twisted-pair or fiber-optic cabling links
devices together.
Ethernet II Frame
Ethernet II is similar to the initial version of Ethernet designed by Xerox, but it has a
different frame format. In Ethernet II frames, the two-byte address after the source
address is a type field. This type field designates which upper-layer protocol should
receive the data when the transmission is completed.
Far End Connection
Far end connection refers to the device connected to other end of the cable you are
testing.
Fast Ethernet
An IEEE standard for running baseband transmissions at 100 Mbps.
Full Duplex
Refers to a communications system or equipment capable of transmission simultaneously
in two directions.
Gateway
A gateway is a device connecting networks using different communications protocols.
This device converts the information into a compatible format so that the information can
be transmitted between devices.
Half Duplex
A circuit which provides transmission alternately in either direction.
Host IP Address
The IP Address of a server on a network.
Host Name
The name of a specific server on a network.
Hub
A wiring concentrator or repeater which joins communication paths at a central location
in a star topology similar to the hub on a wheel.
ICMP
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is an Internet protocol that reports the status
of an IP connection, i.e., such as a destination is unreachable.
