Category 5 Cabling
A type of UTP/STP cable standardized by EIA/TIA that can handle signaling up to 100
MHz (100 Mbps). All components on networks using this type of cabling (i.e., patch
panels, wall boxes, patch cables, etc.) must also be Category 5 certified.
Collision
When two network devices, such as workstations, attempt to send signals simultaneously
on the same path, garbled communications result.
Collision Domain
Since a LAN covers a limited geographic domain, IEEE refers to this area as a
collision
domain
. This includes a single CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision
Detection) network with two or more MAC (Medium Access Control) sublayers. If a
repeater separates MAC sublayers, they lie within the same
collision
domain
. If a bridge
separates them, they are in different
collision domains
. Sometimes splitting a hub or
repeater into separate or multiple
collision domains
is called segmentation. This is an
incorrect usage of the term segmentation.
CRC
Cyclical (or cyclic) Redundancy Check or CRC checks for errors in data transmission by
using a complex calculation to generate a number based on the data transmitted. The
device sending a transmission makes a calculation and sends the result with the
transmission. The device which receives the transmission compares its own calculation.
If both results are the same, then the transmission is considered error free.
CSMA/CD
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection or CSMA/CD is a network
protocol for handling situations where devices transmit simultaneously, resulting in a
collision. To prevent collisions,
CSMA/CD
allows devices to detect other transmissions
and transmit only the line is not busy. If a collision occurs, both devices wait at different,
random intervals and then retransmit.
Default Gateway
IP address of a gateway (usually a router) on a network.
DNS
Domain Name System or DNS refers to the system of naming hosts on the Internet which
have both domain name addresses (i.e.,
www.microsoft.com
) and IP addresses (i.e.,
152.163.195.243). The domain address is easily remembered and understood by human
users and is translated automatically into the IP address which is used by packet-routing
software to locate the host computer.
Error Rate
Error rate is ratio of bits that arriving incorrectly during transmission.
