Loopback
The shorting together of wires in a connector so that a signal sent along the wire returns
to its place of origin.
MAC Address
Medium Access Control (MAC) controls how multiple devices on a network share the
same communications path. This 802.3 standard is the lower half of OSI Layer 2. It
governs access to transmission media (i.e., coaxial, twisted-pair or fiber-optic) and access
to the Ethernet collision domain.
MAU
A Medium Attachment Unit (MAU) is either a transceiver installed internally within a
network device or externally attached using an AUI port. This Ethernet device transmits
and receives data using data packet collision detection. In the case of a multi-port
MAU
, a
single transceiver enables multiple devices to be attached to a single connection on the
Ethernet bus.
MIB
Management Information Base (MIB) describes the objects included in the SNMP agent
database. SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) agents are sometimes called
MIBs
. These agents, either hardware or software, monitor the network activity of devices
and report this information to the network console workstation.
Monitor Report Rate
This value is used to determine how often data is collected from the M.A.Ch.10/100
hardware. This value can be set from 2 seconds up to 10 seconds.
NetBEUI
NetBIOS Enhanced User Interface is a NetBIOS protocol for network operating systems.
Netmask
TCP/IP protocol for deciding how a network is divided into subnets (sub-networks).
NIC
A Network Interface Card (NIC) is an adapter card providing the actual physical
connection between a workstation and the network cabling.
Node
Any device connected to a network that is capable of communicating with other network
devices (e.g., a workstation, fileserver, etc.)
Noise
Any extraneous signal that invades the transmission of electrical pulses or frequencies
along a cable. Noise is measured as impulse or Root-Mean-Square (RMS).
