Top Talkers...
Top Talkers
are tracked by two counters:
current
and
cumulative talkers
.
Current talkers
are those active at the exact time (or “tic” mark) highlighted in the
Histogram
.
Cumulative talkers
are those active from the beginning of the data trace to the highlighted
bar shown on the histogram.
Top Talkers/Conversations
can be accessed by clicking
Histogram
. Clicking
Details
allows you to step through the captured data, looking for stations that are causing the
problem under investigation.
The network statistics are based on network
talkers
. Talkers are individual workstations
generating the highest levels of network traffic. Clicking the
Talkers...
button displays
the
Top Talkers/Conversations
screen, revealing which workstations are the most
active.

Building Your Network Database
The M.A.Ch.10/100 product has a few special features that allow the user to gain and
maintain additional information about any workstation. The manufacturer of the network
interface is determined by the MAC address that has been registered world wide with the
IEEE organization. See the
www.datacom.textron.com web site for an updated list.
Understanding MAC Addresses
The manufacturer is determined by the first three bytes of the MAC address. You can add
additional information by editing the
Card Type
resolution file. This file contains a
database of address configurations by manufacturer. For instance if you know that a card
might be of a particular model, such as a 3COM 3C509, you can start building an address
range of cards that will then be resolved as 3C509 cards.
This is very useful when planning changes to your infrastructure. More information can
be gained and maintained by adding an
Assigned Name
to the workstation. For instance
if you know that Fred, Wilma or Dino is using this workstation, you can fill in the
Assigned Name
field. Click the
Save Name
button to retain this data for future station
resolution.
Assigned names are not displayed during live capture. They are only shown
when reviewing data.
