Troubleshooting

ESS

The Energy Storage System (ESS) is the vehicle

battery pack. It includes the Battery Management

System (BMS) and heating and cooling circuits to

help maintain the proper operating temperature in

cold weather.

Component descriptions

High Voltage Batteries

The high voltage batteries are available in three

configurations: 141 kWh, 209 kWh, and 282 kWh.

In the 141 kWh configuration, the ESS consists of

two battery packs designated Pack 1 and Pack 2. In

the 282 kWh configuration, the ESS consists of four

packs designated Pack 1 through Pack 4. Each

battery pack includes an internal heating circuit and

cooling loop. The layout of the 209 kWh option is not

yet defined.

S-Box

The S-Box is the interface between the ESS and the

other vehicle systems. It includes the Battery

Management System (BMS) which manages and

balances the charging and discharging of the

batteries.

ESS Cooling System

The ESS cooling system helps to maintain the

proper operating temperature in the ESS. It uses a

chiller and pump to circulate coolant through the

battery packs. It is one of three coolant loops on the

vehicle along with the cooling system and the heater.

Chiller

The chiller uses a refrigeration cycle to remove heat

from the ESS coolant circuit. It is powered by 24V

low voltage and communicates via the CAN network.

It also receives analog feedback from a coolant level

sensor in the coolant reservoir. The chiller includes

the Thermal Management System (TMS) which

manages the battery temperature.

Chiller Tank

The chiller tank is the reservoir for the ESS cooling

system. It has an internal sensor which reports the

fluid level to the chiller.

Cooling Circuit

The cooling circuit runs through each ESS battery

pack. For the 141 kWh ESS configuration, there is a

single cooling loop which runs through both battery

packs. For the 282 kWh configuration, there are two

parallel cooling loops which each run through two of

the four battery packs. The layout of the 209 kWh

option is not yet defined.

Warning:

The high voltage batteries are

NOT serviceable and should NEVER be

opened. Only the MSDs and HV cable

connections should be accessed according

to repair and safety procedures.
