Prefeed/Input Phase
This phase begins when an operator places a
sheet on a station table.
MPC1 receives a signal from PE31
(Station 1) or PE35 (Station 2) as
appropriate.
If at the same time, there is a signal from
the proper proximity sensor (PX32-
Left) (PX36-Right), the carriage clamps
engage (SOL37-Left) (SOL38-Right)
and hold the piece to the station carriage.
The station carriage pulls the sheet up
toward the prefeeder (inlet) transfer
cylinder.
When the appropriate carriage up
proximity sensor is on (PX33-Left)
(PX37-Right) along with the prefeeder
transfer cylinder front proximity sensor
(PX39), the piece is released by the
carriage clamps and held by transfer
cylinder clamps (SOL39).
The transfer cylinder moves back. When
the transfer cylinder rear proximity sensor
(PX40) is activated, the transfer cylinder
clamps release and an air blast (SOL40)
pushes the sheet into the pneumatic
clutch-brake rollers, photosensor sets
PE2/PE3 detect the piece.
While the piece continues in between the
clutch-brake rollers, the MPC1 control
board is keeping track of how long the
sensors “see” the piece in order to make
an estimate of its size. This will be used
to determine when to change speeds
during the Spread Phase.
After the sheet clears these sensor sets,
MPC1 energizes SV9 and SV10 to
engage the clutch-brake rollers and hold
the piece.
If MPC1 receives another signal before
the previous piece has been picked up by
the transfer clamps, MPC1 temporarily
holds the second piece to avoid a jam.

Transfer Phrase
This phase begins when the transfer clamp
assembly moves forward to take the corners of the
flatwork piece from the clutch-brake rollers.
MPC1 energizes SV13, causing the
rodless air cylinder to move forward
until a signal is received from PX6,
indicating it has reached the end of its
travel.
MPC1 briefly re-energizes SV9 and
SV10 to turn the clutch-brake rollers
until the piece can no longer be seen by
photosensor sets PE4/PE5. At this point,
the piece is held against the clutch-
brake rollers by the transfer clamp nylon
rollers.
MPC1 energizes SV14 and SV15,
causing the transfer clamps to grip the
sheet corner edges.
MPC1 de-energizes SV13, causing the
rodless air cylinder to move backward,
taking the flatwork with it.
Also at the same time, MPC1 energizes
INV3 (upper spreader motor), causing
the spreader clamps to move toward the
center of the machine.
At the end of the transfer phase, if
necessary, the machine de-energizes
SV8 to lower the upper inlet conveyor to
process the next piece.
