BRAKES 5-48
F ig . 7 5 —Brake Tube Support
Installation
1. Apply a thin coat of brake lube on surface of support
plate at points in contact with brake shoes. Apply
brake lube sparingly to socket end of adjusting screw
and install adjusting screw socket.
2. Insert adjusting screw between adjusting ends of
brake shoes. Adjusting wheel should be nearest right
shoe. Install adjusting screw spring.
3. Spread apart cam ends of brake shoes. Lift shoes
vertically and push into position on support plate.
Install anchor pin brace and two shoe return springs.
Support Plate
Removal
1. Remove propeller shaft flange at mainshaft as out
lined in transmission section.
2. Remove brake shoe and lining assemblies.
3. Remove cotter pin and clevis pin attaching control
lever to link.
4. Mark control lever and camshaft so that parts may
be properly reassembled. Loosen clamp bolt and
slide control lever off serrated camshaft. Remove
camshaft from camshaft bracket.
5. Remove bolts attaching plate to transmission rear
bearing cap, then remove plate.
6. Remove cotter pin, nut, washer and relay lever. In
spect relay lever bushing. Replace damaged or badly
worn bushings.
Installation
1. Position support plate on pilot of transmission rear
bearing cap or retainer and align bolt holes. Insert
four bolts and tighten securely.
2. Install camshaft in camshaft bracket. Align control
lever mark with mark on camshaft and install con
trol lever. Tighten clamp nut.
3. Install brake shoe and lining assemblies.
4. Install propeller shaft flange at mainshaft as out
lined in transmission section.
5. Replace relay lever, washer and nut on shaft. Tighten
nut lightly, then back up to first hole and install new
cotter pin. Nut should be tight enough to restrict
movement of relay lever. Insert clevis pin through
holes in control lever and link and secure with new
cotter pin.
PARKING BRAKE CABLE—LUBRICATION
Refer to Maintenance and Adjustments in this section.
ANCHOR PIN REPLACEM ENT-CHEVY VAN
1. Raise vehicle and place on jack stand.
2. Remove wheel and drum as outlined in this section.
3. Remove brake shoe pull back springs, link and guide
plate.
4. Disengage anchor pin lock and remove anchor pin re
taining nut and washer and remove pin from flange
plate. (Threaded type).
Two type anchor pins are used in production. The
riveted type is not serviced and if failure or damage
should occur to either the anchor pin or flange plate,
both parts will have to be replaced and the threaded
type anchor pin used.
5. Position anchor pin to flange plate, install lock
washer and nut, and torque pin to 80 lb. ft. and lock
by peening over washer tabs.
6. Install brake shoe guide plate, link and pull back
springs.
7. Adjust brakes, install drum and wheel as outlined
previously in this section. Test brake operation.
HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINES AND TUBING
Hydraulic Brake Hose
These hoses require no service other than periodic
inspection for damage from road hazards or other like
sources. Should damage occur and replacement become
necessary, the following procedure is to be followed.
Removal
1. Separate hose from steel line by turning double flare
connector out of hose fitting.
2. Remove “ U” shaped retained spring from hose
fitting and withdraw hose from support bracket.
3. Turn hose fitting out of wheel cylinder inlet or
junction block.
Installation
1. If hose is to be installed in wheel cylinder,
a. Install new copper gasket on cylinder end of hose
(male end).
b. Moisten threads with brake fluid and install hose
in wheel cylinder inlet.
2. For junction block installations,
a. Moisten threads on male end with brake fluid.
b. Turn male end into junction block and tighten
securely.
3. With weight of vehicle on wheels and suspension in
normal position (front wheels straight ahead) pass
female end of hose through support bracket, allowing
hose to seek its own position. Insert hex of hose
fitting into the 12 point hole in support bracket in
position which induces least twist to hose (fig. 75).
