centrics  with  their  self-tapping  screws  and 
install  drum.

d.  At  each  shoe  starwheel,  remove  adjustment  slot 

cover  from  exposed  side  of backing plate.  Insert 
adjusting  Tool  J-4707  and  rotate  starwheel  until 

lining  drags  on  drum.  To  tighten,  move  tool 
handle  toward  axle  while  using  inner  side  of the 
adjuster  slot  as  fulcrum for the  tool,  rotating the 

starwheel  teeth  away  from  the  axle.  Then  back 
off  starwheel  while  rotating  drum  forward,  until 

drag  just  is  relieved.  Provide  additional  run­
ning  clearance  by  backing  off  8-10  more  notches 
and  replace  slot  cover.  Automatic  adjustmenters 
will  now  m a i n t a i n   normal  facing  to  drum 

clearance.

BRAKE  SHOE  LININGS 

Bonded  Lining

Brake  linings  on  front  and  rear  brakes  on  Series  10 

are  attached  to  brake  shoes  by  a  special  bonding 
process.  When  lining  becomes  worn  to  the  extent  that 
replacement  is  necessary,  it  is  recommended  that 
factory-bonded  shoe  and  lining  assemblies  be  used  for 

replacement.  1967  Chevrolet  Trucks  50  as  well  as  60 

Series  have  premium type  facings.

Riveted  Lining

Brake  linings  on Series  20 through  60  are  riveted to the 

brake  shoes  and  may  be  replaced.  Only  brake  linings 

specified  in  Chevrolet  Parts  Books  should be  used.  These 

linings  may  be  purchased  in  replacement  sets  of  four 
linings  and  sufficient  rivets  of  correct  specifications. 
When  replacing  linings,  make  sure  that  shoes  are  clean

and  that  linings  are  installed  in  a  manner  that  will 

prevent gaps between lining  and  shoe.

Conventional  lining  replacement  equipment  should  be 

used.  Make  sure  lining  fits  firm ly against  shoe,  and that 

rivets  are  properly upset.

NOTE: 

If  brake  drums  have  been  refinished, 

oversize  lining  should  be  used.  Refer to  Brake 
Drums.

WHEEL  CYLINDERS

Removal  (Fig.  60)

1.  Jack  up  axle  and  remove  wheel,  brake  drum  and 

brake  shoes  as  directed  u n d e r   “ Brake  Shoe 

Removal. 

”

2.  At  front,  disconnect  metal  brake  tube  from  flexible 

hose  at  frame,  disconnect hose  from  frame,  then un­
screw  hose  fitting from  wheel  cylinder  connector,  or 
from  wheel  cylinder  housing where  connector  is  not 

used.  At  rear,  disconnect  metal  brake  tube  from 
wheel  cylinder  connector.

3.  Remove  cap  screws  and  washers  attaching  wheel 

cylinder  to  flange  plate  and  remove  cylinder  assem­

bly.  Remove  connector,  if  used,  f r o m   cylinder 
housing.

Tw inp lex   Type

1.  Jack  up  axle  and  remove  brake  shoes  as  directed 

under  Brake  Shoe  Removal.

2.  Disconnect  brake  tube  from  rear  wheel  cylinder 

connector  at  inner  side  of  flange  plate.  Remove 

brake  tube  connecting  wheel  cylinders  at outer  side 

of  flange  plate.  Remove  dust  shield  from upper  end 
of each  cylinder.
