REAR SUSPENSION AND DRIVE LINE 4-40
running (no load), should “ turn up” 10,000 rpm with a
maximum draw of 6 amperes.
CA U TIO N :
Do not overheat the motor while
making the following tests:
Place motor in vise, then clamp a small crescent
wrench on the rectangular drive on the armature shaft
and grasp wrench handle with one hand. Connect one
motor wire to a battery terminal and connect motor hous
ing to the other battery terminal. The wrench should tend
to turn with a torque of about 6 in. lbs. Allow wrench to
turn very slowly, making sure that this pull or torque is
present the full 360 degrees turn of the wrench. If one
section of the armature is defective, the torque will dis
appear for a small part of the 360 degrees.
Apply enough load to the motor in test circuit to mo
mentarily stop armature rotation (stall the motor). The
current draw at stall should be a minimum of 40 amperes.
Miscellaneous Parts. Inspect bearing (10), if balls are
rough or chipped, replace with new bearing and snap ring
assembly. Pack bearing assembly with chassis lubricant.
Check torsion spring (17) for breaks or wear at lever
contact points.
Observe condition of fiber contact bumper (24); if
broken or excessively worn, pull out old bumper and
press in new.
NOTE:
A ll gaskets removed should be re
placed by new gaskets to assure proper sealing
of the unit.
Assem bly
1. Install automatic switch assembly into housing using
flat head screw to attach switch to housing. On out
side of housing, install insulator, and jam nuts on
switch terminal screws. Tighten nuts firmly.
2. Position motor cover gasket on housing and insert
motor (with cover) into housing. Install cable clip
and the three cover screws and lock washers.
Tighten screws firmly.
3. Attach motor wires to switch terminals. The longer
wire attaches to bottom terminal. Tighten terminal
nuts.
4. With a screw driver inserted into slot of drive
screw, install bearing on end of screw with shielded
side of bearing toward inside as shown in Figure 81.
Retain bearing with bearing locknut.
5. Run drive nut to center of drive screw, then insert
slotted end of screw into housing, meshing slotted
end with armature shaft.
NOTE:
Fiber bumper contact on drive nut must
be toward switch.
6. Install bearing gasket and cover with three screws
and lock washers. Tighten screws securely.
7. If the assembly consisting of shift fork actuating
lever, torsion spring and spring winding lever has
been separated, reassemble in the following manner.
Place shift fork actuating lever in vise, turn the
spring winding lever with one end of spring, in clock
wise direction until end of spring is past shift fork
actuating lever; then push lever inward until the
spring is locked in place.
8. Dip above assembly in SAE 10 engine oil. With drive
nut on drive screw assembly in center of screw,
and fiber contact bumper down toward switch, po
sition the slots of winding lever over the drive nut.
Install the lever shaft through center of assembly
into depression in housing.
9. Install front cover gasket on housing. Install housing
front cover with detent spring against drive nut. At
tach cover securely with screws and lock washers.
Installation
1. Check the two lead wires on the housing terminals.
2. With the seal between the carrier and shift unit po
sitioned correctly; slide the shift unit on the differ
ential carrier studs with the torsion spring swivel
block inserted in the shift fork slot.
3. Install the stud nuts, tightening to
5 0 -7 0
foot-pounds
torque.
4. Fill the shift unit to operating capacity with lubricant
as specified under “ General Maintenance.”
5 .
Check installation by making a “ LO” and “ HI” range
shift. Ignition must be turned on before check can be
made.
NOTE:
The shift unit motor runs equally well
in either direction, however, if the lead wires
are reversed at the terminals on the shift unit, *
the axle will shift to the opposite range of that
indicated on the control switch.
6. Connect wire at plug.
VACUUM CYLINDER DIAPHRAGM
Replacement
1. Remove clamps on hose connections at the vacuum
cylinder and slip hoses off the connecting fittings.
2. Remove the three retaining bolts and lock washers
retaining the vacuum cylinder assembly to the dif
ferential carrier housing and remove the vacuum
cylinder assembly from the vehicle.
3. Remove the screws that attach the two halves of the
vacuum cylinder and remove the outer half.
4. Using two 1/2" open end wrenches, one to hold the
push rod inner nuts and the other to remove the outer
nut from the push rod, remove the diaphragm plates
and diaphragm.
5.
Install new diaphragm and plates to push rod and
tighten the retaining nut securely.
NOTE:
Apply Permatex around push rod hole
between diaphragm plates.
6. Assemble outer half of vacuum cylinder to inner half,
install retaining screws and tighten securely.
7 .
Install a new gasket and install the vacuum shifter
assembly on the differential carrier housing.
8. Replace hose connections and install clamps.
CA U TIO N :
Be careful not to transpose hose
connections.
9. Test operation of shifting mechanism in all speeds.
VACUUM CYLINDER OIL SEAL
Replacement
1. Remove clamps from hose connections and remove
hoses from fittings.
2. Remove the three lower retaining bolts and lock
washers that attach the vacuum cylinder to the dif
ferential carrier housing and remove the vacuum
