FOUR WHEEL DRIVE 3-25

a. Remove the steering arm from top of knuckle,

then remove a .005" shim (fig. 3) from over arm

attaching studs.

b. Install steering arm and tighten attaching stud

nuts firmly.

c. Recheck starting torque necessary to turn the

knuckle. If there is still excessive play, repeat
Steps a. and b.

NOTE:

Do not remove shims in excess of

.010". If there is excessive play after removing
.010" shim, worn bearing cone or cup is indi

cated, the steering knuckle should be disas

sembled and inspected as outlined under “ Front

Axle Steering Knuckle” later in this section.

5. If knuckle turning torque is too low on heavy duty

44-5HDF axle, it will be necessary to perform the
following:
a. Remove a .003" or .005" shim located between

lower trunnion cap and knuckle (see Inset fig. 3).

b. After removing shim, install trunnion cap, tighten

cap retaining bolts firm ly, then recheck knuckle

turning torque.

c. If check indicates that further adjustment is re

quired, repeat Steps a. and b.

NOTE:

On this axle at the knuckle upper trun

nion, a shim pack of .060" dimension should be
maintained. See Inset of Figure 3 which shows

shim sizes.

COMPONENT PARTS REPLACEMENT

3. Remove internal snap ring, outer clutch retaining

ring and actuating cam body.

4. Relieve pressure on the axle shaft snap ring and re

move snap ring.

5. Remove the axle shaft sleeve and clutch ring as

sembly and inner clutch ring and bushing assembly.

6. Remove pressure spring and spring retainer plate.

Disassem bly

1. Remove actuator knob and “ O” ring from retaining

plate, discard “ O” ring and replace with a new

“ O” ring during assembly.

2. Slide inner clutch ring and bushing assembly from

axle sleeve and clutch ring assembly.

Inspection

1. Wash all parts in solvent and air dry.

2. Inspect all parts for wear, cracks or broken teeth.
3. Replace all “ O” rings during assembly.

Assem bly

1. Place new “ O” ring seal on actuator knob. Apply

lubri-plate to “ O” ring and place actuator knob in

retaining plate.

FREE-WHEELING HUB

The free wheeling hub assemblies used on the front

wheels are serviceable. The K10 hub is of a different

design than that used on the K20.

2. Remove six retaining plate bolts and remove retain

ing plate, actuating knob and “ O” ring.
