Remove  piston,  primary  cup,  cup  expander,  piston 

return  spring,  check  valve  and  check  valve  seat. 

Clutch  cylinder  side

Remove  same  as  brake  cylinder  side  except  for  re ­

moval of check valve  and  check valve  seat.

Single  C y lin d e r

1.  Remove  lock  ring,  secondary  cup  and  piston  from 

main cylinder.

2.  Remove  the  primary  cup,  spring valve  assembly  and 

valve  seat.

3.  Remove  reservoir  cover  and  gasket from top  of main 

cylinder.

Inspection  and  Repair

Clean  all  dirt and  grease  from  the  main cylinder  with  a 

non-toxic,  non-petroleum  solvent.

1.  Wash  all  parts  in  clean  alcohol.  Make  sure  that in­

take  and  compensating  ports  in  main cylinder hous­

ing,  bleeder  holes in piston and vent in filler  cap  are 

clean and open.

NOTE: 

Before  washing  parts,  hands  must  be 

clean.  Do  not  wash  hands  in  gasoline  or oil be­

fore  cleaning  parts. 

Use  soap  and  water  to 

clean  hands.

2.  Inspect  cylinder bores to  make  sure  they  are  smooth.
3.  Inspect  primary  and  secondary  cups,  valve  and valve 

seat  for  damage  or  swelling.  Swelling  of  rubber 
parts  is  due  to  the  use  of  improper  brake  fluid or 
washing parts  in gasoline  or kerosene.

NOTE: 

The  primary  cup  has  a  brass  support 

ring  vulcanized  in  its  base  to  prevent  it  from 

imbedding  in  the  bleeder  holes  during  braking 
action.

4.  Check  piston  fit  in  cylinder  bore  (fig.  34).  The 

clearance  between  piston  and  wall  of  the  cylinder 
should be  from  .001" to  .005".

5.  Replace parts  as  required.

6.  Check  clearance between the  edge  of the primary  cup 

and  the  edge  of the  compensating port.  To  check this 
clearance,  proceed  as  follows:
a.  Place  spring  assembly  in  the  housing  bore  with 

the  stamped  retainer  toward  the  open  end  of the 

bore.

b.  Place  primary  cup  over  the  spring,  with the  flat 

side  outward.

c.  Using  the  piston  push  the  cup  inward sufficiently 

to  allow  assembly  of  the  piston  stop  snap  ring, 

then  release piston against  snap  ring.
