Specify any pre or post-scripts you plan to use. The pre replication scripts will be
executed before the replication process begins and the post-scripts will executed at the
conclusion of the replication process.
Snapshot Rules
If a replication policy is configured to use a snapshot rule, then when the replication begins no
snapshot will be taken. Rather, the replication will use the most recent snapshot associated
with the rule as the source of the replication. Snapshot rules are typically used when the
replication includes a database or some other system that needs to be stopped in order to
capture a consistent copy. The data management engine expects a snapshot will be taken as a
result of an external command that may have been issued by the pre-replication script. In
addition, to perform incremental replications, the data management engine needs the snapshot
used during the previous replication.
Note the following:
•
If no snapshot exists in the rule, then the data management engine issues a warning
message and performs a full replication using an automatically created snapshot that is
be deleted immediately after the copy.
•
If the snapshot taken during the previous replication has been deleted, a full copy is to
be done instead of an incremental.
Custom Replication Scripts
Replication scripts are custom-written to perform specific functions. These scripts can be run
prior to or after each replication. It is possible to specify scripts to execute each time an
incremental replication is made. Under normal conditions, there's no need to use pre-replication
and post-replication scripts and snapshot rules. The replication engine will take care of
snapshot implementation to ensure proper incremental replication.
However, in the case of database or other applications that require a consistent state, the best
practice would be to use the pre-replication and/or post-replication scripts and snapshot rules
together.
•
The pre-replication script is executed to completion before the replication is started.
•
The post-replication script is executed after a successful replication.
Potential uses of pre-replication and post-replication scripts are illustrated in the following
examples:
To backup a database
A pre-replication script can be used to backup database files. Typically, this pre-replication
script will need to:
