Active/Active RAID Controllers
The RAID controllers operate as an Active/Active (A/A) pair within the same rack. Both RAID
controllers can actively process disk I/O requests. Should one of the two RAID controllers fail,
Titan re-routes the I/O transparently to the other controller, which starts processing disk I/O
requests for both controllers.
System Drives
System Drives are the basic storage element used by the Titan SiliconServer. A System Drive
comprises a number of
physical disks
. The size of the System Drive depends on multiple factors
such as the RAID level, the number of disks, and their capacity. RAID 5 is the only supported
RAID level for the FC-14 and SA-14. Titan assigns each System Drive a unique identifying
number (ID).
Hot Spare Disk
A hot-spare disk is a physical disk that is configured for automatic use in the event that another
physical disk fails. Should this happen, the system automatically switches to the hot-spare disk
and rebuilds on it the data that was located in the failed disk. The hot-spare disk must have at
least as much capacity as the other disks in the System Drive. The hot-spare disk is a global
hot-spare, meaning that only one hot-spare disk is required per RAID rack.
When the failed disk is replaced, the RAID controller’s CopyBack process will automatically
move the reconstructed data from the disk that was the hot spare to the replacement disk. The
hot spare disk will then be made available for future use.
If it is necessary to remove and replace disks, it is possible to perform hot swap operations. In
other words, an offline or failed disk can be removed and a new disk inserted while the power is
still on and the system is still operating. Sixty seconds should be allowed between disk removal
and replacement to allow the management system to recognize the change.
Discovering and Adding Racks
FC-14 and SA-14 RAID racks must be discovered and added to a Managed SiliconServer before
system drives can be created. Discovered racks may be added to the list of RAID Racks for the
currently selected Managed Server.
