The phone sends up to 99 messages to the host, each one second apart. Each message has 24
bytes of optional data (the total message length is 32 bytes) and the phone increments the
sequence numbers, starting with 1, and continues incrementing the numbers during the test.
After receiving a reply to the first message, the phone displays:
The top row
displays the IP address of the host (which may be resolved from what you
typed).
The second row
displays:
•
the number of the message (1 to 99)
•
the result of the ping test (received a reply or time out)
•
the round trip delay, resolved to 1 ms, which is calculated by storing the time at which it
sent the message in the data portion of the ICMP message
The bottom row
displays:
•
the minimum round trip delay, in ms
•
the average round trip delay, in ms
•
the maximum round trip delay, in ms
All times are resolved to 1 ms.
The maximum time that the phone waits for a response is 990 ms. If it receives a response
after that time, it ignores it. After this time-out, the phone displays:
The phone does not use this time when calculating the minimum, average, or maximum
times.
The phone continues to send messages. When it receives a response to a message it updates
the second and third rows of the display. The phone continues in this way until it has sent
99 messages or until you press the
Esc
button to stop the test. When you stop the test, the
phone waits the time-out period for any expected reply. The phone displays:
The phone shows the number of echo request messages that it sent and the number of echo
reply messages that it received before timing out.
