There are three Boolean operators:
and
or
not
For example:
scanner and fax
This search string finds only documents that contain both words,
“scanner” and “fax”.
In contrast, consider this search string:
scanner or fax
This string finds documents that contain either one of the words
“scanner” or “fax”, not necessarily both words.
Use the “not” operator to exclude documents. For example,
scanner and fax not printer
This string finds documents that contain both “scanner” and
“fax”, but do not contain “printer”.
You can also use parentheses to build more complex search
strings. For example:
(scanner or printer) and prices
This string finds documents that contain the words “scanner” or
“printer” and the word “prices”.
Note that the wild-card operators can be used in concept
searches, as well. For example:
scan* and print*
This string finds documents that contain any derivations of both
the words “scan” and “print”, such as “scanner” and “printer”,
“scanning” and “printing”, and so on.
