scale to gray—An image enhancement process that converts a
binary (black and white) image into 4-bit or 8-bit grayscale to give
it a smoother appearance. See also grayscale.
scanner driver—A software module that serves as an interface
between a software application and a scanner. The scanner driver
sends requests from the application to the scanner in a language
the scanner can understand. Pagis Pro supports two types of
scanner source drivers—ISIS or TWAIN. See the glossary entries
for these three items for more information.
search index—In Pagis Pro, a folder of special files that is
created to keep track of (index) scanned and electronic documents
in all or part of a user’s Windows file system. An index contains
information about the contents and location of files, as well as
any author, title, or keyword assigned to the files. By using the
index and the Pagis Search Tool, you can easily search and
retrieve documents.
segment—In a layered XIF file, part of the color image layer
containing one color picture. Each color picture is contained in a
segment of this layer.
stemming—In database searches, a feature that locates terms
that are based on the root of the specified search term. For
example, if you specified the word “scan” as the search term, the
search engine would find “scanning”, “scanner,” “scanners”, and
so on.
