1. M easure the f r e e length of the
v a lv e springs.
R ep lac e the spring if the f r e e length
is le ss than the limit.
2. M easure the spring tension with
a spring t e s t e r .
R ep lace it if the tension is le s s
than the limit.
3. Check the va lve spring sq u are­
n e s s using a steel sq u are, and a
surface plate. P la c e the spring
against the square ed ge, and r o ­
tate the spring slowly.
T h e space between the top coil
of the spring and the square edge
should be within the limit. If it ex­
ceed s the limit, replace the spring.
