2. Check the commutator fo r rough
n ess, burnt o r s co re d su rface.
If n e c e s s a r y , d r e s s o r cut with
a lathe just enough to re m o ve stock
to clean the su rface.
If the diameter of the commutator
is out-of-round m ore than 0.3 mm
(0 .012" ) , cut the commutator on
a lathe.
T h e out-of-round should be less
than 0.1 mm ( 0 . 0 0 4 " ) .
T h e servicea b le limit of the com
mutator is 36.8 mm ( 1 . 4 5 " ) , and
if the limit e x c e e d s , replace the
a rm atu re.
T h e specified commutator diameter
is 3 8 .8 m m ( 1 . 5 3 " ) .
3. Check the mica depth, and file off
the mica if the depth is less than
0 .2 mm ( 0 . 0 0 8 " ) .

using a g r o w l e r .
Connect one test prod on the com
mutator , and the other test prod
on the armature c o r e o r shaft.
If the test lamp lights, the a rm a
ture coil is grounded.

on the g r o w l e r , and hold a hack
saw blade o v e r the armature c o r e
while rotating the arm ature.
If the hacksaw blade v ib r a te s , the
armature coil is shorted.
R e p a ir o r replace the arm ature.
Check the armature coil fo r open
circuit by placing the armature on
the g r o w l e r , and connect the two
commutator segments with the test
p r o d s , and check the reading.
