Installing and Operating the Passport 5430 Multiservice Access Switch
5-2
306308-A Rev 00
When you start the Passport 5430 for the first time, it completes an initial startup
procedure to boot and connect to the network using either a default configuration
file or one already customized and available on the network.
The diagnostic software runs automatically when you first start the Passport 5430.
If a power-up diagnostic test fails, then diagnostic software attempts to identify
the failing CRUs. The diagnostic software will not run on subsequent power-ups,
unless you enable diagnostics.
The Quick-Start script requires a local console connection and the flash memory
card shipped with the Passport 5430. If you attempt to boot the Passport 5430
without the flash memory card inserted, the Passport 5430 does not operate.
Diagnostic Software
The diagnostic software bootstrap resides on the system processor card. Most of
the diagnostic software resides on a PCMCIA flash card. The diagnostic image,
called pp5430diag.a, is approximately 1 MB.
If diagnostics are enabled when you boot the Passport 5430, the diagnostic
software bootstrap loads the diagnostic software from the flash card. If the
diagnostic tests are successful, the Passport 5430 boots. If the diagnostic tests fail,
the failing CRU is identified. The system may or may not boot following a
diagnostic failure depending on which CRU failed.
If the diagnostics image is not on the flash card, the Passport 5430 will try to boot.
If the Passport 5430 is unable to boot, you will need the diagnostics image. If you
have additional Passport 5430 switches installed, you can download the
diagnostics image from one of their flash cards, boot the Passport 5430.
Diagnostics will run and identify the failure.
Note:
Do not delete the diagnostics image pp5430diag.a from the flash card.
If you delete the diagnostics image you will not be able to run diagnostic
software.
