ARTIFACT
The NeuroBlate System SideFire® Directional Laser Probe and the FullFire® Diffusing Tip Laser
Probes will create an imaging artifact in an MR image. Examples of the image are given for an
MPRAGE imaging sequence for a 1.5T Siemens system in Figure 5.1, and for a 3T Siemens
system in Figure 5.2. Imaging on the 3T system created the largest artifact of approximately
0.3mm from the surface of the probe lens.
For both figures, the 2.2mm probe is shown on the left and the 3.3mm probe is shown on the
right for each image set. The images in the top row captures the view of the distal portion of
the shaft of the probe, and the images in the bottom row are perpendicular to these and at the
location of the blue line shown in the top row. The left-most top and bottom images show the
MR artifact from the probe, and the right-most images have a representation of the probe
overlaid on the images for reference.
In order to successfully complete the “Insert” workflow step in a NeuroBlate procedure (see
Section 8.7), the current location of probe is identified from the probe artifact in the MR image.
The figures below give examples of how the probe artifact may appear, and the corresponding
probe location as identified from these images.
