Emulsion
Small particles of one liquid that readily disperse in another liquid. Usually emulsions involve a dispersion of
water in an oil or a dispersion of oil in water. Possible causes are mixing or tank filling. Emulsions normally
separate back into their constituent parts over time.
•
if the emulsion is a constant mix of more than 5 % water then interface is measured from the top of the
emulsion
•
if the emulsion separates gradually from 0 to 100% water then the device measures interface at the
bottom of the emulsion
For accurate interface measurement to be possible, the top product and emulsion must have stable
dielectric constant values.

Free space
A zone, given as a minimum diameter, around a probe that should have no objects in it for a gauge to
correctly measure level. Size depends on probe type. See section 1.2.1 Location: all applications for more
details.

Gain
See threshold and section 4.2.4 Advanced setup: further notes. An amplification factor given by the signal
converter to a returning measurement pulse to make it usable by the device.

Hazardous area
Area with a potentially explosive atmosphere in which the instrument can be installed when ordered with the
appropriate options. The device requires approvals (ATEX, FM, etc.) corresponding to site specifications.

Distance from the face of the flange to the liquid/liquid interface. See following diagram.
Interface level
Height from the bottom of the tank (user-defined) to the liquid/liquid interface (also defined as tank height -
interface distance). See following diagram.
