Water ballasting (Table 4-7)
Warning
When mixing the ballast solution it is
imperative the calcium chloride flakes are
added to the water and the solution stirred
until the calcium chloride is dissolved.
Never add water to calcium chloride. If
the flakes should contact the eyes, wash
the eyes immediately with clean, COLD
water for at least five minutes. See a
doctor as soon as possible.
Filling the front and rear tyres with
liquid ballast is a convenient method of
adding weight. A solution of calcium chlo-
ride and water is recommended.
This gives a low freezing point and
provides a higher density than plain water.
The following table shows the quantity of
calcium chloride solution required to give
a 100 % fill. For a 75% fill use 3/4 of the
listed quantity.

The weights indicated are based on 1
kg (2 Ib) of calcium chloride per 4.5 litre (1
gal) (1.2 US gal) of water. To prevent acid-
ity 0.5 kg (1 Ib) of lime should be added to
every 45 kg (100 Ib) of calcium chloride.
Note
If the tyres are ballasted with calcium
chloride/water solution, a special tyre
gauge should be used as the solution will
corrode the standard type of gauge.
Note
When filling a tyre with calcium chlo-
ride/ water solution the valve should
be at the highest point on the tyre. The
valve should be at the lowest point when
checking or adjusting air pressure if the
tyre is liquid ballasted.
Wheel nut tightness
Check the wheel nut tightness every
250 hours.
If any of the wheels have been re-
moved, or you are checking the tightness
the wheel nuts, the tightening torques are
as follows:
Front - two wheel drive: 95 N.m
Front - four wheel drive:
Disc to axle hub - 270 Nm (200 lbf ft).
Rim to disc - 190 Nm (140 lbf ft).
Rear - cast centre wheel: PAVT and
cast centre - 270 Nm (200 lbf ft)
