(ii) I want to keep my Outlook on my device up-to-date with my company’s Exchange
server, receiving and sending Outlook email at my device
In addition to synchronizing with a desktop PC, ActiveSync on the device allows you to
synchronize Microsoft Outlook information directly with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and
Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, so that you can keep your email, calendar data, tasks and
contacts updated wirelessly when you are away from your desktop or tablet PC.
You can send and receive Outlook email at your device without any need for a PC. How to
do that wirelessly has been covered in Chapter 5, Messaging. As an alternative to those
methods of connection, you can connect the device to the Internet via a PC that has Internet
access as described above and/or synchronize Outlook information with the Outlook on the
PC. When you connect the device to the PC, the PC will detect the device and the Sync Setup
wizard will start automatically. This would typically be useful in situations where you have no
Wi-Fi access and no cellular coverage or where connecting to the Internet via a PC can be
achieved at a lower cost.
NOTE: If you have a PC which is already fully synchronised with your Exchange Server, then it is
recommended to synchronize your device to your PC the very
fi rst time instead of synchronizing to the
Exchange Server. This will allow faster synchronization and could save you data costs.
Change Synchronization settings
After you set up synchronization using the Sync Setup wizard on the PC, you can change your
synchronization settings. If you have previously connected the device to the Exchange server
wirelessly, you will already have con fi gured the Exchange server logon details and chosen
Outlook items to be synchronized.
The Sync Setup wizard on the PC is also capable of con fi guring and customizing the device
settings. In fact, you can even use it to install or uninstall programs and themes on the device
(at the PC, click Tools, and then click Add/Remove Programs).
