Configure the node out of the cluster, as described in the operating environment
documentation.
a.
b.
Shut down the node, as described in the User Guide for the server.
c.
Disconnect an existing InfiniBand cable link. This step might require the removal of
cable management components that are specific to the model of server and the InfiniBand
interconnect.
Note:
You might need to remove the server from the rack to install a PCI card. Because clusters
are configured from a variety of servers and interconnects, the cable management
components are often specific to the cluster. These cable management components either
enhance or replace the standard rack kits that typically ship with a server. For example,
the articulated cable management arm found on many server installations is never used
in HP cluster platform, because the arm cannot support the heavy copper link cables.
A separate installation guide is provided with each cable management component, and
shipped with the cluster. You must locate, read, and understand the cable management
guides before attempting to install an HCA card.
3.
Label and disconnect the server's cables. If you are replacing an existing HCA, first disconnect
the InfiniBand cable and remove its cable straps so that you can carefully secure it out of
the way. Do not bend the cable beyond its minimum bend radius.
Caution:
It is important to label all communication cables so that you can reconnect them to the correct
ports. A node might have three network connections.
4.
Remove any cable management parts that prevent you from extending the server from the
rack.
5.
Depending on the requirements for access to the server's PCI slots, either remove the server
from the rack, or remove the required panels.
6.
Identify the correct Installation slot. Always install the HCA in the PCI slot that is specified
for your model of server. This slot is usually a PCI-X, or PCI-Express slot on a specific bus.
Using an alternate slot can impair system performance.
Caution:
Never install any additional PCI cards (such as I/O cards) that are not specified in the original
configuration of your Cluster Platform. Additional PCI devices can also impair cluster
performance, particularly on shared buses.
7.
Remove any slot blanks and bulkhead retaining screws. Reserve the screws for later use.
8.
Unpack the HCA and observe the usual precautions for potential damage due to static
electricity. Handle the HCA only by its metal bracket and avoid touching the gold-plated
connector fingers
9.
Place the gold connector in the PCI slot, ensuring that the bracket is parallel with the bulkhead
cutout, and that the connector is aligned with the slot.
10. Seat the HCA firmly into the PCI-X, or PCI-Express slot by pressing only on the top edge
of the bracket.
Some slots can be very tight and resist the insertion of a card. If the card is not level, remove
it and insert it again, this time pressing both on the bracket and on the back corner of the
printed circuit board (PCB) with your thumb. However, do this very carefully and only at
the corner of the PCB to avoid touching circuit components and etched tracks.
