Instant restore overview (virtual disks)
The
instant restore
feature allows you to restore data on a virtual disk with data from one of its previously
created replicas (mirrorclone, snapclone or snapshot). The operation is
instant
because the restored data
is available within seconds for host I/O (the actual data transfer occurs in the background).
For example, assume that the database named
sales_db
becomes corrupt. You can instantly restore it to
a prior state from one of its replicas.

Best practices
•
For most situations, HP recommends that you perform instant restores using GUI actions, not jobs.
•
To ensure data integrity, an instant restore should only be performed on an unmounted,
unpresented virtual disk.
•
If the virtual disk is mounted, use the following general approach.
1.
Stop host I/O to the disk that is being restored.
2.
Unmount the disk. This forces the disk’s write cache to be
fl
ushed (emptied).
3.
Perform an instant restore to the disk.

If the restored host volume does not have consistent data left in cache after following this
procedure, repeat the procedure.

Instant restore from mirrorclones
This feature allows you to restore data on a virtual disk with data from its fractured mirrorclone.
For example, restore the virtual disk named
sales_db
with the data from it’s fractured mirrorclone
sales_db_backup
.

Scenario, restoring from "a planned point-in-time"
1.
Create a mirrorclone of the disk to be restored at some future date.

At a point-in-time you want, fracture the mirrorclone. The mirrorclone contains point-in-time data.
3.
When necessary, restore the disk from its mirrorclone.
