This chapter describes the following important information to note before operating
the system.

E.1
Notes on System Configuration
This section describes the points to be noted when configuring the main unit.
E.1.1
System control and operation environment
The SMC is a dedicated control unit for the main unit. As such, the SMC is connected
to the main unit using the interfaces described below and is controlled by system
console software developed specifically for the SMC.
(1)
Hub for system control LAN (10Base-T), and LAN cables up to 30 m
(98.4 ft)
l
One hub is required for the system control LAN.
l
Four or more hub ports must be installed to support this configuration. The number
of required ports depends on factors such as the system size (e.g. the number of
partitions) and whether or not the cluster configuration is enabled.
l
Before using a switching hub (such as Spanning Tree Protocol or Domain
Separation) that supports the function for preventing undesirable loops, be sure to
first suppress this loop-prevention function by either disabling the Spanning Tree
Protocol on the port for connecting the switching hub to this unit, or by setting the
Domain Separation switch to on.
