CHAPTER 4 Hardware Overview
4.5.3
PCI hot plug
The following sections explain the PCI hot plug.
4.5.3.1
Overview of PCI hot plug
The PRIMEPOWER900 supports the PCI hot plug, which enables a PCI adapter to be
added (connected) to and deleted (disconnected) from the Solaris
TM
Operating
Environment while the system is running.
Combining addition and deletion makes the following possible:
• Hot system maintenance
A faulty PCI adapter can be removed, and a new one added.
l
Non-redundant configuration
Any job that uses the target adapter must be stopped.
l
Redundant configuration
The target adapter can be replaced without stopping the job.
• Hot system expansion
PCI cards can be added to handle an increase in jobs while the system is running.
4.5.3.2
Insertion and extraction of PCI cards
l
For information about the workflow when the PCI hot plug is used, and the
procedure for replacement and expansion, refer to the “PCI Hot Plug User's Guide
I/O device edition”.
l
For information about command interfaces, refer to the “PCI Hot Plug User's
Guide”.
l
For information about PCI cards that support PHP, refer to Chapter1, “PCI cards
with support for PCI Hot Plug” in the “PCI Hot Plug User’s Guide I/O device
edition”.
These manuals are supplied with the Enhanced Support Facility.
PCI cards must be inserted and extracted by certified service engineers.
