configure stacking fallback-ip-address
configure stacking fallback-ip-address <address> {</mask-length>|<mask>}
[slot <slotnumber> vlan <vlan-id]
Description
Configures a backup IP address to protect against duplicate IP addresses.
Syntax Description
Default
None
Usage Guidelines
If the stack master should lose connectivity with the stack members, the stack would separate into two
segments. Each of the segments would become independent stacks and inherits the same configuration
from the previous single stack. When a stack splits into two segments, a duplicate management IP
address can result causing the switch not to be manageable or accessible through telnet.
To prevent a duplicate IP address, assign a fall back IP address for each slot. The fall back IP address
configuration is stored in the NVRAM and is not part of the system configuration. Because the fall back
IP address is stored in non-volatile storage, users can individually specify the fall back IP address for
each slot.
For Summit 200 and Summit 300-24 systems, the fall back IP is configured on the given VLAN ID. If the
VLAN ID is not configured, then the IP Address is configured for the default VLAN. For Summit 400
systems operating as a slot, the VLAN option is not applicable. In Summit 400 systems, the fall back IP
address protects the IP address of the VLAN to which the management port is assigned.
If the slot number is not given, the configuration is applied for the local switch.
NOTE
The same duplicate IP address scenario can occur with other VLANs. Take appropriate care to prevent
any operational issues that can arise due to duplicate IP addresses being used in a non-management
VLAN.
Example
The following example sets a fall back IP address for slot 5:
configure stacking fallback-ip-address ipaddress 10.12.123.1 255.255.255.0 slot 5
address
Specifies the IP address of the VLAN ID or default VLAN.
mask-length
Specifies a subnet mask as the number of bits (e.g. /24).
mask
Specifies a mask in dotted-quad notation (e.g. 255.255.255.0).
slotnumber
Specifies the ID of a switch in a stack.
vlan-id
Specifies the VLAN ID of the management VLAN.
