superscalar
Describes a processor that issues multiple independent
instructions per clock cycle.
symmetric multiprocessing (SMP)
A processing configuration in which multiple processors in a
system operate as equals, dividing and sharing the workload.
symptom-directed diagnostics (SDDs)
An approach to diagnosing computer system problems whereby
error data logged by the operating system is analyzed to capture
information about the problem.
system backplane
One of two backplanes on the AlphaServer 2000 system. The
system backplane supports up to two CPU modules, up to two
memory modules, and an expansion I/O module.
system bus
The hardware structure that interconnects the CPUs and
memory modules. Data processed by the CPU is transferred
throughout the system via the system bus.
system disk
The device on which the operating system resides.
TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. A set of
software communications protocols widely used in UNIX
operating environments. TCP delivers data over a connection
between applications on different computers on a network; IP
controls how packets (units of data) are transferred between
computers on a network.
test-directed diagnostics (TDDs)
An approach to diagnosing computer system problems whereby
error data logged by diagnostic programs resident in read-only
memory (RBDs) is analyzed to capture information about the
problem.
