The BIOS is an embedded program that runs on both processors at hardware reset. Two copies
of the BIOS reside in Flash memory for each processor node. These are stored as primary and
alternate boot images. The primary image is field-upgradable. This approach allows the
alternate image to be used if errors in the primary image upgrade process are encountered.
The BIOS configures all on-board resources and brings the board to an operational state and
passes control to the operating system. Once the resources are configured, the PBIT
application is executed if enabled. PBIT validates operation of the hardware devices present
on the board. After completing initialization with a satisfactory result from PBIT, the BIOS
either transitions to an application program, or interacts with the serial port accepting and
processing maintenance commands.
Because the CHAMP-AV8 does not contain a video port, a serial terminal is required for
communication during the board boot process. See “Connect a Terminal” on page 3-5 for
details. One terminal is required per processor.
