Shimming (regular rotation model)/Backlash (regular rotation model)

Set the lower unit upside down.

NOTE:

Install the dial gauge so that the plunger

contacts the mark

on the backlash indica-

tor.

Slowly turn the drive shaft clockwise and
counterclockwise, and measure the
backlash when the drive shaft stops in
each direction.

Add or remove shim(s) if out of specifica-
tion.

M: Measurement

Install the special service tools so that it
pushes against the propeller shaft.

NOTE:

While turning the drive shaft clockwise 5-6
times to contact the gear evenly it tightens
center bolt

to specified torque.

Install the backlash indicator onto the
drive shaft (22.4 mm [0.88 in] in diame-
ter), then the dial gauge onto the lower
unit.
