Description
softwareDownload(5)
Software download is a very important feature to
the Network Manager. It allows the firmware on
the management or modem modules to be
upgraded for feature enhancements and bug
fixes. The software download process is non-
trivial due to the coordinated series of SNMP
operations together with one or two TFTP file
transfers. Once the steps are understood,
however, implementation on the management
station is straightforward.
Software Download to the Modem Modules
The softwareDownload(5) command from the uchasCmdTable
allows you to perform a software download to all the modem
channels in one or both modem modules simultaneously. When
these commands are executed (i.e., by using the SNMP SET
request) each slot selected is put into a software downloa
d state,
essentially rendering them active only for purposes of SDL.
Querying the uchasCmdTable rows for the affected slots (i.e., by
using the SNMP GET request) should result in an inProgress(3)
status in the uchasCmdResult column for the appropriate rows;
this indicates successful command initiation on these slots. Once
the uchasCmdFunction object is SET to softwareDownload(5), the
management station must begin the next step. Failure to do so will
result in the devices aborting the software download.
The next step involves transferring the .SDL file from the MS to the
management module. The following is an example of how this
might be done
:
TFTP -B PF010100.SDL
192.77.203.65=PF010100.SDL
This is an example of the Novell LAN Workplace TFTP application
syntax for downloading binary file
PF010100
to the MP/16
management module with IP address 192.77.203.65. The
PF010100.SDL
file represents the local file while the filename after
the "=" refers to the destination file. The destination file must
either have an extension of .sdl (case insensitive) or the filename
must be SDL (compatible with earlier versions of NMC software).
If a TFTP write session is available on the MP/16, it will send the
trigger request to each slot involved in the software download.
This places the modem modules in the software download state
and allows the management module to receive the card I
