pressed and the ignition switch in the “ON”
position, perform the following steps:
To override the shift lock:
1. Set the parking brake and stop the en-
gine.
2. Take out the flat-head screwdriver from
the on board tool bag.
Left-hand drive vehicles
Right-hand drive vehicles
3. Wrap a flat-head screwdriver in a cloth
and force it under the plate cover near
each of the four lug locations (see the
drawing above) to lever up the plate cov-
er.
NOTE
To make it easier to force in the flat-
head screwdriver, press down the cen-
ter console by hand to create a gap un-
der the plate cover.
4. Remove the plate cover using both
hands.
5. Insert the key into the hole.
6. Push down on the key and move the
selector lever from the “P” to the “N” posi-
tion.
7. Remove the key from the hole. De-
press the brake pedal and start the engine
with the select lever in the “N” position.
We recommend that you take your vehicle
to the nearest SUBARU dealer immedi-
ately to have the system repaired.

Be sure to wrap the flat-head
screwdriver in a cloth, otherwise it
could damage the center console.

not to break the plate cover.
