PROBLEM
POSSIBLE CAUSE
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Spindle does not raise or
lower easily.
1. Elevation lock knob tightened.
2. Elevation work gear is clogged
with wood debris.
1. Loosen elevation lock knob.
2. Clean and lubricate elevation worm gear (refer to
Page 39
).
Workpiece is burned when
cut.
1. Dull cutter.
2. Feed rate too slow.
3. Cutter speed too fast.
4. Pitch or resin build-up on cutter.
5. Cutter rotating in wrong direction.
6. Taking too deep of a cut.
1. Replace cutter or have it professionally sharpened.
2. Increase feed rate.
3. Decrease cutter speed.
4. Clean cutter with resin removing cleaner.
5. Reverse the direction of the cutter rotation; feed
workpiece against the cutter rotation.
6. Make several passes of light cuts.
Fuzzy grain after cut.
1. Wood moisture too high or surface
wetness.
2. Dull cutter.
1. Check wood moisture content and allow to dry if
over 20%.
2. Replace cutter or have it professionally sharpened.
Chipping on workpiece
after cutting.
1. Knots or conflicting grain direction
with cutter rotation.
2. Nicked or chipped cutter.
3. Feeding workpiece too fast.
4. Taking too deep of a cut.
5. Cutting against grain of wood.
1. Inspect workpiece for knots and grain direction;
only use clean, solid wood.
2. Replace cutter or have it professionally sharpened.
3. Slow feed rate down.
4. Take a smaller depth of cut. (Always reduce cutting
depth when working with hard woods).
5. Cut with the grain of the wood.
Divots in edge of cut.
1. Inconsistent feed rate.
2. Inconsistent pressure against fence
and/or rub collar.
3. Fence not correctly adjusted.
