Fence Adjustment
The fence for the Model W1807 is a two-piece, indepen-
dently-adjustable system. The entire fence assembly can
be moved by positioning the fence mount, and each fence
board can be further micro-adjusted for different cutting
thicknesses and special shaping applications. One com-
plete turn of the fence alignment knob moves the fence
board approximately
1
⁄
16
".
To adjust the fence boards, do these steps:
1.
DISCONNECT THE SHAPER FROM POWER!
2.
Loosen the fence mount locks (see
Figure 19
)
and
position the fence boards close to the required set-
ting; then re-tighten the fence mount locks.
3.
Loosen the fence board lock handles by pulling up on
the handle and rotating it.
4.
Use the fence alignment knobs to position the fence
boards for your operation, then re-tighten the fence
board lock handles.
5.
Use the lateral lock bolts to adjust both fence
boards as close to the cutter, from side-to-side, as
possible without interfering with the cutter rotation.
This gives maximum support to the workpiece as it
passes the cutter.
Note:
Additional information about fence adjustment is
covered in the
Straight Shaping
subsection on

.
Always securely lock the fence mount
and fence boards in place before start-
ing the shaper. Otherwise, the fence
could slip and cause your hands to be
drawn into the spinning cutter. Failure
to heed this caution could result in
serious personal injury.
Cutter Rotation
Your shaper is equipped with a forward/reverse switch
(see
Figure 20
). Most cutters are designed to rotate coun-
terclockwise (forward, as observed from above the cutter)
and mill the stock from underneath, keeping the cutter
away from the operator and preventing tear out.
Some cutters are designed to shape the top of the
workpiece. However, this method creates a hazard to
the operator. Using the forward/reverse switch, you can
mount the cutter upside-down, reverse the feed direction
and cutter rotation, and mill the workpiece safely from
the bottom.
Incorrectly feeding stock WITH the
rotation of the cutter creates a poten-
tially uncontrollable feed situation that
may pull the stock away from your
hands and pull your hands into the
cutter. Always check the cutter rota-
tion, and that you are feeding stock
AGAINST the cutter rotation.
