HP Heavy-Duty Industrial Tilting Spindle Shaper
Irregular Shaping
Freehand or irregular shaping
greatly increases the risk of the
operator losing control of the
workpiece. Therefore, a pivot
point and a rub collar MUST be used
during freehand shaping. Losing
control of the workpiece during
freehand shaping could result in
serious personal injury.

Example of a jig or fixture, and
a starting block.
Irregular or freehand shaping is cutting without using the
safety guard or fence assembly. You must use a rub col-
lar to control the depth of the cut and to support the
workpiece while cutting. A piece of wood is clamped to
the table as a starting block and pivot point. The starting
block supports the workpiece while you slowly pivot the
workpiece into the cutter (see
Figure 41
). It is important
to never start cutting at the corner of the workpiece or
kickback may occur—even with the support of the starting
block.
To set up the shaper for freehand shaping, do these
steps:
1.
DISCONNECT THE SHAPER FROM POWER!
2.
Remove the fence assembly.
3.
Clamp the starting block to the table in a position
that allows you to safely feed the workpiece into
and against the rotation of the cutter.
4.
Attach the workpiece to a fixture or jig, and place it
against the starting block (see
Figure 42
).
Note:
Refer to
Pattern Work
on
Page 36
for addi-
tional information on making jigs or fixtures.
5.
Install the cutter so it will cut in the correct direc-
tion, adjust the cutter height and tilt, and turn the
shaper
ON
.
6.
Slowly pivot and feed the workpiece into the cutter.
DO NOT start the cut on a corner of the workpiece
or kickback could occur. Once the cut is started and
the workpiece is riding firmly on the rub collar, the
workpiece should be pulled away from the starting
block.
