Shaping Small Stock
Feeding workpieces shorter than 14" through the shaper
is always dangerous. If you must shape small stock, use a
zero-clearance fence. This will provide greater safety to
the operator, more support to the workpiece, and reduce
tear out on narrow or fragile stock.
Note: Zero-clearance fences can also be combined with
a custom box guard for even greater safety and ease of
operation.
A zero-clearance fence is constructed to provide enough
room for the spindle and cutter to rotate freely while
minimizing clearance around them for maximum support.
To make a zero-clearance fence, do these steps:
1. DISCONNECT THE SHAPER FROM POWER!
2. Remove the fence boards from the fence mount.
3. For the zero-clearance fence, select a piece of
straight and smooth stock with the same height and
thickness as the fence boards, and approximately 48"
long.
4.
Duplicate the mounting holes from the fence boards
onto the zero-clearance fence so that it can be
mounted onto the fence mount with the same fas-
teners.
5. Cut out an outline of the spindle and cutter in the
center of the zero-clearance fence so that there
is just enough room for the spindle and cutter to
rotate freely (see
Figure 37
).
6.
Secure the new zero-clearance fence to the fence
mount, and cut a test piece to verify the results.

In addition to push sticks, always use
hold-downs or featherboards when
shaping small or narrow stock. These
devices will keep your hands away
from the spinning cutter and support
the stock sufficiently to allow a safe
and effective cut. Failure to follow this
warning could lead to severe personal
injury.
