HP Heavy-Duty Industrial Tilting Spindle Shaper
Straight Shaping
The Model W1807 fence assembly is a two-piece, indepen-
dently adjustable system. When removing material from
the whole face of your workpiece, the outfeed fence can
be adjusted to provide support for the workpiece as it
passes the cutter. You can also adjust the fence boards to
make partial face cuts.
To set up the fence for cutting material from the whole
edge of the workpiece, do these steps:
1.
DISCONNECT THE SHAPER FROM POWER!
2.
Place the workpiece against the infeed fence and
slide it up to the cutter.
3.
Use the fence mount and infeed fence board adjust-
ments to position the workpiece for the desired
depth of cut (refer to
Fence Adjustment
on
Page 25
for instructions).
4.
Adjust the outfeed fence board even with the infeed
fence.
Note:
Make sure all fence mount and fence board
locking levers are securely tightened, and the safety
guard is in place before starting the shaper opera-
tion.
5.
Adjust both fence boards as close to the cutter as
possible without interfering with the cutter rotation.
6.
Connect the shaper to power and turn the shaper
ON
.
7.
Using a piece of scrap wood similar to the workpiece,
advance it far enough past the cutter so that it just
extends beyond the edge of the outfeed fence board.
8.
Turn the shaper
OFF
—DO NOT move the workpiece
from the infeed fence board.
9.
Once the cutter has come to a complete stop, adjust
the outfeed fence board so that it just touches the
newly cut workpiece edge, as shown in
Figure 33
.
10.
Make sure all fence locks are tightly secured before
proceeding with your shaper operation.
AMPUTATION
HAZARD!
Accidental contact
with a spinning
cutter will remove
parts of fingers or
large chunks of flesh.
Safety guards greatly
reduce this risk and
must always be used
when operating this
machine!

Straight Shaping
Using the miter gauge to push a
workpiece along the fence can cause
the workpiece to bind and increase
the risk of kickback. DO NOT use the
miter gauge and the fence at the same
time. Use push sticks and hold-downs
with the fence to keep the workpiece
in position.
