Troubleshooting
This section covers the most common problems and corrections with this type of
machine.
WARNING! DO NOT make any adjustments until power is disconnected and
moving parts have come to a complete stop!
PROBLEM
POSSIBLE CAUSE
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Motor does not start or a
breaker trips.
1. Fuse has blown.
2. Emergency stop button is engaged;
is faulty.
3. Motor connection wired
incorrectly.
4. Thermal overload relay has
tripped.
5. Contactor not getting energized;
has burnt contacts.
6. Wall fuse/circuit breaker is blown/
tripped.
7. Power supply is at fault or
switched off.
8. Forward/reverse switch at fault.
9. Wiring is open; has high
resistance.
10. Motor is at fault.
1. Correct short; replace fuse in electrical box.
2. Rotate emergency stop button until it pops out;
replace it if faulty.
3. Correct motor wiring connections; refer to diagram
inside motor junction wiring box cover.
4. Turn amperage dial to increase working amps and
push the reset pin; replace if tripped multiple
times.
5. Test for power on all legs and contactor operation;
replace unit if faulty.
6. Ensure circuit is correct size for machine load
(refer to
Page 10
); replace weak breaker.
7. Ensure hot lines have correct voltage on all legs
and main power supply is switched on.
8. Replace faulty forward/reverse switch.
9. Check for broken wires or disconnect/corroded
connections, and repair/replace as necessary.
10. Test/repair/replace motor.
Machine stalls or is
underpowered.
1. Wrong workpiece material.
2. Feed rate too fast for task.
3. Dust collection is poor.
4. V-belt slipping.
5. Motor connection is wired
incorrectly.
6. Pulley slipping on shaft.
7. Motor bearings are at fault.
8. Machine is undersized for task.
9. Motor has overheated.
10. Contactor not getting energized or
has poor contacts.
11. Motor is at fault.
1. Use wood with correct moisture content (less than
20%), without glues, and has little pitch/resins.
2. Decrease feed rate.
3. Seal all leaks, size ducts correctly, eliminate bends,
and refer to Dust Collection Basics Handbook (ISBN
0-9635821-2-7) for further recommendations.
4. Re-tention/replace V-belt (refer to
Page 41
).
5. Correct motor wiring connections.
6. Replace loose pulley/shaft.
7. Test by rotating motor shaft; rotational grinding/
loose shaft requires bearing replacement.
8. Use sharp cutters; reduce the feed rate/depth of
cut.
9. Clean off motor, let cool, and reduce workload.
10. Test for power on all legs and contactor operation;
replace if faulty.
11. Test/repair/replace motor.
Machine has vibration or
noisy operation.
1. Motor or component is loose.
2. V-belt worn or loose.
3. Motor fan is rubbing on fan cover.
4. Cutter or spindle is at fault.
5. Machine not stable on floor.
6. Elevation housing is loose.
7. Pulley is loose.
1. Inspect/replace stripped or damaged fasteners, and
retighten with thread locking fluid.
2. Inspect/replace V-belt (refer to
Page 41
).
3. Replace dented fan cover/fan.
4. Replace cutter; tighten/replace loose spindle (
Page
44
).
5. Secure machine to floor; reposition; re-shim.
6. Replace cracked elevation housing.
7. Realign/replace pulley shaft, pulley, set screw, and
key as required.
