Example:
If (M2) is 78.94 mm and “R” is (–1), then
(T2) = 80.00 + (–1)/100 – 78.94 mm
= 80.00 – 0.01 – 78.94 mm
= 1.05 mm
If (M2) is 78.87 mm and “R” is (+6), then
(T2) = 80.00 + (+6)/100 – 78.87 mm
= 80.00 + 0.06 – 78.87 mm
= 1.19 mm
TIP:
“R” is the deviation of the lower case dimen-
sion from standard. The “R” mark
a
is
stamped on the anode mounting surface of
the lower case in 0.01 mm units. If the “R”
mark is unreadable, assume that “R” is zero
and check the backlash when the unit is
assembled.
4. Select the reverse gear shims.
Example:
If (T2) is 1.05 mm, then the reverse gear
shim is 1.0 mm.
If (T2) is 1.19 mm, then the reverse gear
shim is 1.1 mm.
Measuring the forward and reverse
gear backlash
1. Remove the water pump assembly and
outer plate cartridge. See “Removing the
water pump” (8-6).
2. Set the gear shift to the N position.
3. Install the special service tools 1 , 2 ,
and 3 , and then tighten the center bolt
2 temporarily.
4. Turn the lower unit so that the propeller
shaft is pointing downward.
5. Turn the drive shaft 10 times or more to
seat the taper roller bearing.
